Phase 2: Targeted Interventions and Managing Complications

Overview

  • By 2011, the NIROGI Lanka project successfully completed a mid-term review conducted by the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF).
  • The project demonstrated a strong impact on diabetes care for vulnerable populations through:
  • Capacity building of Diabetes Educator Nursing Officers (DENOs)
  • Development of multi-professional care via public-private partnerships
  • Empowerment of at-risk communities towards healthier lifestyles
  • Recognized as a sustainable and well-coordinated programme, addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Sri Lanka.
  • Following these achievements, the Diabetes Prevention Task Force (DPTF) committed to continue the project for an additional three years (Phase II).

Key Focus Areas

  • Further improving the quality of diabetes care, especially in:
  • Maternal and child health
  • Diabetic foot care
  • Strengthening capacity building of medical and allied health professionals involved in specialized care.
  • Developing a long-term care package for mothers, using a life-cycle approach.
  • Enhancing long-term follow-up for high-risk individuals, including those with previous ulcers or amputations.
  • Aiming to prevent limb complications, reduce hospitalizations, and improve patient outcomes.

Expansion & Sustainability

  • Applied lessons learned from Phase I to pilot health promotion programmes in underserved urban areas.
  • Evaluated the sustainability of health promotion models already established in suburban communities.
